Sustainability

Sustainability is important in two learning areas Education for Sustainability and Geography

Education for Sustainability

A sustainable future requires the development of ways of thinking and acting to meet the needs of the present generation without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their own needs. Students on a visit to Wai-O-Tapu can investigate the processes by which biodiversity and ecological processes are sustained.

Students would be able to complete Internal Achievement Standard 90811 “Describe the consequences of human activity within a biophysical environment in relation to a sustainable future” worth 4 credits.

Geography

Sustainability is one of the key concepts in Geography and at Wai-O-Tapu students can investigate how sustainable interaction with the environment has been achieved by preventing, limiting, minimizing or correcting environmental damage to water, air and soil, as well as considering ecosystems and problems related to waste, noise, and visual pollution.

When booking a field trip through the Rotorua Education Network (REN) you will have access to the Level 1 Geography Internal Standard, AS 91009 (1.3): “Demonstrate geographic understanding of the sustainable use of an environment, Resource title: “Tourism in Rotorua”. There is a student task sheet which students can complete on the Wai-O-Tapu field trip which will assist students in completing the task in order to gain three NCEA credits.
